About The Apple Market History
The Apple Market is a family-owned and run business that has been in operation since 1972. It is one of the few family-run fruit markets left in our area today.
On April 26, 1950, Joseph Tiveron bought a 15 – acre farm at the corner of the Queensway and Camilla Road. Here he became a fruit farmer, specializing in apples, onions, carrots, tomatoes, and rhubarb.
In the summer of 1972, Joseph’s son, Dave Tiveron, opened a small fruit stand in the family’s barn. Unfortunately, the barn burnt down in late September and everything was lost. Dave convinced his dad to build a new building for him to use.
In the spring of 1973, Dave and Paula Tiveron opened The Apple Market / Tiveron Farms as a seasonal fruit stand and garden centre. Here they sold only the freshest fruits, vegetables, and plants, from the spring to fall months. It operated seasonally until 1989.
As time went on, the Tiveron family grew, as did the Market! Dave and Paula added a fresh-baked goods section, a small deli, and a unique grocery section. They also became the proud parents of three healthy children – Jennifer, Ashley, and James. In Dave and Paula’s eyes, three children also meant three cheap employees! The kids grew up helping Dave and Paula around the store, after school and on weekends. Many customers have watched them all grow up!
As customer demand continued to increase, The Apple Market decided to add a gourmet, full-service meat counter, while expanding the bakery and grocery sections.
The year 2000 brought many new additions to The Apple Market. The Tiverons, showing their concern for their customers’ health and wellbeing, introduced a professionally-run health and wellness department. This brought awareness to cutting-edge supplements, vitamins, and natural health products. This also gave way to The Apple Market’s Annual Health & Wellness Fair that occurs every September, attracting both companies and consumers from across Canada.
In December 2006, the Market strengthened its push to offer healthy choices by bringing on a full line of fresh, organic produce at affordable prices.
The philosophy of fresh thinking and customer service is still in place and have maintained the Tiveron’s vision of a small, country, farm market in the heart of the city. They are constantly trying to keep on top of the latest products, while continuing customer service and freshness to its fullest!
